Juan Francisco Pérez Villalba is a Colombian film director and screenwriter based in Las Vegas, Nevada, and a six-time Emmy® Award winner. For more than fifteen years, he has built a career across film, television, and advertising, with his work earning awards and nominations across four continents.As a narrative filmmaker, Pérez Villalba works primarily across science fiction, fantasy, drama, and romance, using genre to explore scientific and philosophical questions about time, memory, love, human relationships, and the consequences of our choices. Regardless of genre or format, his work is driven by the same pursuit: transforming ideas into emotion and creating images and stories that remain with audiences beyond the screen.

He currently works as a Creative Services Producer at Telemundo Las Vegas, part of NBCUniversal, where he develops, writes, directs, and produces promotional campaigns, multiplatform content, and commercials for station clients. His transition into U.S. television began at Univision Nevada in 2023, where he worked as a News Branding Specialist, developing campaigns and short-form content from concept through directing, cinematography, editing, and final delivery. Across both roles, he has brought cinematic storytelling, visual language, and emotional construction into formats that often have only seconds to establish a world, communicate an idea, and connect with an audience. While directing and screenwriting remain at the center of his professional identity, his experience across cinematography, editing, producing, and post-production has given him a comprehensive understanding of how the elements of filmmaking work together to create emotion.His work in U.S. television has earned six Emmy® Awards from the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, Pacific Southwest Chapter. He received his first Emmy for short-form editing during his first year in U.S. television; the following year, he won five Emmy Awards in a single ceremony, with recognition spanning directing, news promotion, editing, human-interest storytelling, and news photography.

Before establishing himself in the United States, Pérez Villalba developed his career in Colombia as an independent writer-director. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Social Communication with a concentration in Audiovisual Production from Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, where he wrote and directed his first short films and received an Honorable Mention for his undergraduate thesis. He also directed five episodes of Historias en un Minuto, later broadcast on RCN’s international signal.In 2012, he wrote and directed Our World, a fantasy drama about a man and a woman inside a mental health institution who fall in love and create an imaginary world to escape their reality. The short received seven awards, including the Telefónica Award for Creativity in Digital Content, and was nominated for Best New Creator at the Cartagena International Film Festival (FICCI) before reaching audiences through theatrical and television exhibition. The project introduced themes that would recur throughout his work: the tension between reality and imagination, emotionally isolated characters, intimate human relationships, and the ways memory can reshape our experience of the past.In 2013, Pérez Villalba premiered Déjà Vu, a twelve-episode science-fiction web series he created and directed when serialized fiction for the web was still emerging as a narrative format. The series earned fourteen awards at festivals across the Americas and Europe, including recognition for directing and screenwriting, and later expanded into television and VOD distribution. It strengthened his interest in serialized storytelling and in using science fiction not simply as spectacle, but as a way to explore the relationship between time, choice, consequence, morality, and emotional conflict.In 2018, Standpoint, a romantic short directed by Pérez Villalba and conceived and photographed entirely in the vertical 9:16 format, premiered while vertical filmmaking was still emerging as a cinematic language. The film screened at specialized festivals across four continents and received the Vertical Theater Competition — Encouragement Award at Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia in Japan, reflecting his interest in experimenting with emerging formats while keeping story and emotion at the center.In 2019, Pérez Villalba premiered Loop at BOGOSHORTS — Bogotá Short Film Festival. The science-fiction short, which he wrote and directed, follows a man who uses a time machine to save his own life while risking becoming trapped inside a temporal paradox. It earned eight awards, including the FantLatam Grand Prize for Best Latin American Short Film of the Year, and was later distributed theatrically, on television, and through VOD platforms. Loop deepened a recurring fascination in his work with time travel, its paradoxes, and the consequences of trying to change the past.

His feature screenplay Despite the Rain (A pesar de la lluvia) was selected for two Ibero-American development programs: the Residencia Iberoamericana de Guion and FantasoLab, a development lab for fantastic film projects. Combining science fiction and romance, the story follows a scientist who uses time travel in an attempt to repair a failed relationship, confronting temporal paradoxes that challenge the possibility of changing the past. The screenplay reflects a broader approach in Pérez Villalba’s work: using scientific ideas as a way to explore love, regret, free will, and the human difficulty of accepting the past.In 2019, he founded Short Now, an independent production company focused on the development, financing, production, and commercial distribution of short films and short-form series. During its active period, Pérez Villalba developed, wrote, directed, and produced fiction and documentary projects, securing four competitive production grants and commercial distribution agreements for theatrical, television, and VOD release. Among them was La relatividad del amor, a science-fiction romantic comedy that continued his exploration of time travel and its paradoxes and was released theatrically at Cinemark theaters in Colombia.

Parallel to his narrative work, Pérez Villalba spent more than a decade directing commercial, branded, and institutional content for companies and cultural organizations including Mastercard, Merrell, Motorola Solutions, Hush Puppies, and Ministerio de Cultura de Colombia. This work strengthened his ability to find stories within strategic communication needs and bring cinematic storytelling to commercially driven projects.

For Pérez Villalba, film and television are not separate creative paths but complementary expressions of the same vocation. Cinema has given him the space to explore worlds, concepts, and complex questions; television has taught him how to distill narrative and emotion into limited time, work with immediacy, and tell stories with greater economy and precision. Each language continues to inform and expand the way he approaches storytelling.Whether working within a thirty-second promotion, an episodic story, a short film, or a feature-length story, Juan Francisco Pérez Villalba approaches each project with the same conviction: a meaningful story can emerge in any format when there is a point of view capable of discovering it.
